  • Maxey Elementary is a Magnet School that specializes on Visual and Performing Arts.
By choosing to enroll your child(ren) in the Maxey Elementary Visual & Performing Arts Magnet, you are providing them with an exciting educational opportunity with an emphasis in the arts. Parents and students are expected to comply with the requirements of the Maxey Elementary Visual & Performing Arts Magnet Program.

    Maxey Elementary Magnet Program Areas

    Dance
The focus of the Dance Magnet Program is to inspire young minds and bodies to engage in exploration, observation, self-discovery, decision-making and problem solving as they develop their artistry in the field of dance.  Students will learn many aspects of dance including proper warm- up and stretching exercises, technique, improvisation, choreography, history, and staging.  Students will be provided with an overview of multiple dance genres such as ballet, modern, jazz, hip hop and cultural dance.  Each of the concepts will be taught in a progression that will challenge the students at an age appropriate level.  There will be many performance opportunities throughout the year that will highlight the “Dance Magnet Students”.

    Visual Arts
Art Academy’s purpose is to propel student’s skills and talents so that they can communicate visually with excellence.  Gaining that purpose with experiences in skill development, a sense of craftsmanship through technique, appreciation of historical and cultural aspects and making connections with real-life, and other subjects.  Ultimately, culminating with students who have developed critical and creative thinking skills.

    Music
The Music Magnet Program will prepare students to become music performers and informed citizens
through experiences in a variety of musical forms, styles and genres.
These experiences will be addressed in two main ways:

    1. Students will express themselves through the experience of music performance and music creation.
    • Expressing thoughts and feelings through music.
    • Responding to music by identifying main features found in music.
    • Demonstrating an understanding that music expresses itself to humans in a
language that cannot be paraphrased in words.

    2. Students will recognize their own exceptional abilities in order to engage on developing their
individual skills in performing, listening and creating.

  • There are many ways to get involved at Maxey!

We have community partnerships through the Partners In Education program. These parternships allow us to establish mutually supportive relationships between the school and community. If you are interested in becoming a partner, please reach out to Mrs. Rodriguez at soleil.rodriguezmaldonado@ocps.net. We also have a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) chapter at our school which works hard to raise funds that are used to support our students and staff in a variety of ways. Additionally, we have our School Advisory Council (SAC) which works with the school principal to provide input into the School Improvement Plan and budgetary expenses. Throughout the year we host many after school events for families including Literacy and Math Nights, Movie Nights, and Multicultural Night. These events provide the perfect opportunity for families to come and learns ways to support their child’s educational journey.

  • Maxey Elementary School in Winter Garden, Florida, is  named after William S. Maxey and his wife, Juanita. They were prominent educators in the Winter Garden community during a time of segregation. William Maxey served as principal for 28 years at the Charles R. Drew School (formerly the Winter Garden School for the Colored), while Juanita was a dedicated teacher there for 45 years.

The Maxeys arrived in Winter Garden in 1937. William became principal of the one-room Winter Garden School for the Colored, and Juanita taught there.

    Growth and Expansion:

Under William Maxey's leadership, the school expanded, adding classrooms, teachers, and eventually a library and science lab.

    • Charles R. Drew School:

The school, originally named the Winter Garden School for the Colored, was renamed in honor of Dr. Charles R. Drew, a renowned Black scientist.

    • Maxey Elementary's Origin:

When the elementary grades were separated from the larger Drew High School, the elementary school was named Maxey in honor of the couple.

    • Legacy:

The Maxeys' dedication to education, particularly for African American students during segregation, is remembered through the school's name and the Maxey Community Center.

    • Current Status:

Maxey Elementary School is now a public school serving students from Pre-K through 5th grade and is part of the Orange County Public Schools system
